Leading a self-reflection and embodiment exercise, Grace asked the participants what cultural identity represents for them in 1 word.

Belonging

I feel like growing up I’ve never felt like I belonged if I left my house. It is only now that I’m reflecting and seeing how hard it was to be the only black kid in school, weekend activities, friendship groups and out at the shops. I didn’t realise how much it was affecting my confidence always feeling like I had to hide or change myself.

When I dance I feel like there’s nothing I need to change about myself. I can be proud of myself and where I want my journey to go. When I dance as part of the Kwabo group I feel like I belong, It’s been one of the first times in my life that I feel like I’m part of a community. I’ve made so many friends that are already I know will be lifelong and I’m so grateful for Grace for all her hard work to create this space.
